Avril Lavigne Dies In Whistler? Not True

Today there was a wildfire of fake news about Avril Lavigne dying in snowboarding accident in Whistler. While this has been a lesson in social media journalism, it has generated a huge spike in chatter about the event. While this isn’t my idea of a funny joke, I hope that social media can spread quickly enough that she is alive and well. There’s no official report from her Twitter feed, but we hope she is enjoying the beach in Hawaii!

Jon Montgomery Wins Gold At 2010 Winter Olympics: Congrats!

I just wanted to take the time to congratulate Jon Montgomery for his victory this past week, we’re all quite proud of him here in Whistler! The 31-year-old native won the first world cup skeleton meet of the season Friday on the very same track where he took the 2009 world cup gold, as well as the 2010 Winter Olympic gold! Jon two runs had a combined time of one minute, 47.56 seconds, 0.28 faster than 2008 world champion…wicked mate!

Whistler Mountain Opens Early November 19th

Well this is just bloody great news for myself and all the powder heads up here. The news has been going around the web, Twitter and the town here as to the early opening of Whistler on the 19th. This just after I posted about Whistler’s opening on the 25th has gone down the drain, oh well, at least this is still good news, right? This Friday should be a busy one up here in Whistler and I know a few travel agents who started getting flooded with emails and calls with booking requests…something I like to hear about! If you’re coming to town on vacation and perhaps want a taste of the life here in Whistler then just fill out the contact form to the right here and I’ll get back to you asap!

Whistler Film Festival December 1st – 5th

One of my favorite events of the ski season besides the mountain is the Whistler Film Festival which takes places from the 1st of December, right down to the 5th. With a 50% Canadian film line-up, you will get to see an almost equal number of foreign films which is great. I’ll be the first to admit, there’s usually not a whole lot of awesome going on when it comes to Canadian film and Television….keep in mind, I’m someone who thinks the best thing to come out of this country has been The Trailer Park Boys. Last year I did get a good taste of amazing Canadian cinematography, so I’ll be going in again with an open mind, and not such a sour attitude.

Whistler Blackcomb Opening Day November 25th 2010

While in the last week we’ve had a beautiful dumping of over 70cm of delicious, sexy, white, cool powder on our god like mountains with more to come. Opening day is of course November 25th 2010…well officially anyhow. The town is starting to pick up to its usual vibrant self as it always does this time of year. I enjoyed my quiet September and October, but now I’m ready to hit the slopes and sell some Whistler real estate. I’d like to thank the Whistler Blackcomb Vimeo Crew for putting out this amazing teaser video…it got me going!

The company was going for the $900-million mark which is about $15 to $16 a share, which actually fetched C$12.50 and C$13 each, down from its initial projection. Whistler Blackcomb Holdings Inc., owner of the Canadian ski resort that hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, today reduced the share price range for its C$300 million IPO, according to two people familiar with the sale. CIBC World Markets would have profited the most. With 28 per cent of the deal, the firm misses out on roughly $13-million in revenue, assuming the deal came in around $850-million.

The fresh powder tracks have been laid and with another week of good looking weather heading our way, it surely is the start of the season.
